High school dance club wins the cheerleading competition and is crowned champion of Asia

The dance club of Kansai Soka Senior High School recently took part in the ICU (International Cheer Union) Asia Open Cheerleading Championship. Kansai Soka Senior High School was one of the schools representing Japan in this year’s championship, which was held for the first time in Tokyo. The club won first prize in the “Cheer Hip Hop Team” category and secured their place as the top school in Asia. They outperformed the team which had won the world championships earlier this year, earning high overall marks from the judges for their highly coordinated teamwork and the difficulty of the formations they attempted. At the awards ceremony the club was presented with the championship shield, and gold medals were placed around the neck of each member of the club. A total of 96 teams from 10 countries (Japan, Kazakhstan, Chinese Taipei [Taiwan], Thailand, United States of America, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Ukraine, and Russian Federation) took part in the competition, with participants ranging from elementary school students to adults. The club members were congratulated heartily by representatives from other countries, and succeeded in forging friendships that transcended borders.
