English debate club wins Tokyo tournament and earns spot at the national competition

Tokyo Soka Senior High School's English debate club took part in the 21st Tokyo High School English Debate Tournament (hosted by the Tokyo Senior High School English Education & Research Association) held at Tokyo Metropolitan Toyama High School on October 8 and 9. This year's topic was "Should Japan significantly relax its immigration policies?" The Soka team placed third in the qualifying round and made it to the semifinals after competing with Shibuya Kyoiku Gakuen Shibuya Senior High School, and Shoei Girls' Senior High School. In the semifinals, the Soka members defeated Kanto International Senior High School 3-0 and won the Tokyo tournament by defeating Koishikawa Secondary School 2-1 in the finals.
Consequently, the Soka debate club earned a chance to attend the 12th National High School English Debate Tournament, to be held at Tokyo International University in Saitama Prefecture on December 16 (Saturday) and 17 (Sunday) (hosted by the All Japan High School English Debate Association). The club will have made their 11th appearance at the national competition (for the sixth consecutive year).
